I'm starting to do some freelance work, both data analysis and visualization with R, Python, Matlab, etc.

I don't have a website and need to create one. I've looked around and have been shocked at the insane priced that many web developers charge for their services. What did you did? Assuming you do freelance work, how did you deal with the website...create your own, etc.

I know basic xhtml and css, but I don't think I can put together a quality website in one month.

Not sure of anything offhand, but you might want to check out some of the sites that let you build portfolios if you don't want to build custom. Maybe google something like 'design portfolio.'

Web design takes time, and it takes know-how, so the cost is attached to that.
