Visualize This: 10k Giveaway Edition - FusionCharts Licenses Up For Grabs!

Started 2 years ago by nathany / 8 posts

  1. Unlike previous Visualize This projects, I'm not going to post a specific dataset. Instead, create a dashboard using the no-restriction trial version of FusionCharts on the theme of education and then post a link (and preferably a screenshot) to to your entry to this thread. The trial version of FusionCharts has all the same functionality as the licensed one, so go wild. You are also welcome to use any of other of the InfoSoft products in your dashboard. Make it clean, make it sexy, and most importantly, make it informative.

Feel free to focus on education data for just your area or make a dashboard for your entire country. Look at elementary schools, colleges, private schools, or all of the above. The key is to make a dashboard for a branch of education that interests you.

Here are some education data sources to get you started:

Got any others? Please post them here.

The three best dashboards (chosen by me and readers) will each be awarded a FusionCharts Professional License. Good luck! I'm looking forward to seeing what you all come up with.

Download the trial version of FusionCharts here.

    DEADLINE: March 3, 8pm EST

  2. no python bindings?

  3. Here is my entry:

I chose to look at some higher education stats from Australia, particularly student to staff ratios across the country.

While the overall picture shows a fairly steady student to staff ratio over time the story is a little different when you drill down by state or by staff types. The preliminary findings show that the ACT has the best ratio. There are only 6 students to each staff member in the ACT. Interestingly, Australia’s best university, ANU is in the ACT.

Unfortunately I ran out of time to look into ratios by staff types before the close of this competition but I am excited enough about Fusion Charts and the data to keep going so check back from time to time.

I found Fusion Charts to be very powerful but with a steep learning curve for me. Given I started with almost no knowledge of XML, Flash or JavaScript and only limited experience writing my own HTML/CSS from scratch I think my Dashboard shows that it is possible to get a handle on Fusion Charts in a couple of days.

I have tried to adhere to some of the basic principles of visualisation, particularly those discussed in Stephen Few’s excellent book. That is why you will see no 3D graphs very few lines and borders.

    Cheers
    Carmel

PS: It looks better in Firefox than IE. I ran out of time to tweak.

  4. Hey carmel, is that the right URL? I'm getting a 404 error.

  5. Sorry, should be okay now. Has the competition closed?

  6. Very nice dashboard above. I didn't realize the word dashboard until a bit too late for my available time, but it's been nice learning FusionCharts regardless. I could see a lot of nice uses for this. The first being for all those education data sources listed above. The interface design of the sources listed in the post is trying!

    Anyway, my dashboard-ito:

(also better to view in Firefox)

  7. @quantie it was over before you entered, but seeing as you were the only who entered and you went through all that trouble, i'll let things slide :)

  8. That's great @nathany - thanks. Your post does say that the competition ended "DEADLINE: March 3, 8pm EST" - 24 hours after the other two. I'm assumed that meant EST US time.

Anyway, can't wait to remove the 'evaluation copy' text from the graphs and tweak some more.

    Thanks again.

    Carmel
