Useful app for gathering data?

  1. We've started on a new app and I wanted to check that it hasn't been done before.

The app sits on a person's smartphone and logs their location in the background every couple minutes. At the end of the week, it provides a report to the user, including:
    - how far they travelled
    - how long their commute was
    - how long they were at work
    - how many times they went to the gym
    - how many stores they visited

(all this data provided in a compelling format of course)

    The user could then:
    - see how they compare against other people in their area (or their friends)
    - learn about events in their area
    - learn about deals at places they already shop

    The questions I have:
    1) Do you know of anything similar or competing?
    2) Is it something that you would use? (you can sign up to be a tester at http://beta.risetribe.com/lifestream)

    All the best,

    Matt

  2. Hey Matt,

    Sounds like a great app!

You may want to pick Aaron Parecki's brain regarding this:

He's done a lot of personal GPS logging and visualization. He will probably know what's out there in terms of software and if it's been done already.

To the best of my knowledge, no app has all the features you discuss.

    Thanks for sharing!

  3. PEIR collects and processes similar data, but with a different end-user focus:

There's also Campaignr, which is a client to help make data collection easier on mobile:

These are both from a research center called CENS, which I happen to be part of :)
