I just realized I'm having the same problem over and over again. I have 2 series that I'm comparing over time - say GDP of country A and GDP of country B - and I want to present to a reader the growth in GDP of the 2 countries for them to compare. I can show this by graphing the GDP of the 2 countries, and presumably the reader's eye can judge the slope of the two graphs, OR I can graph the year-on-year growth itself. How do I know which to do when? Any opinions?

Philosophical question - line graph with actual values or percent difference?

Though it's not incredibly creative, I typically use a bar chart to show year over year comparisons (typically month-by-month for two years).
Something like this link http://oas.samhsa.gov/2k1/enterTX/fig3.gif if you replaced Male/Female with CurrentYear/PreviousYear.
