Infographic without story, is it still infographic?

  1. Hi,

I'm new to "data viz". As I study more on data viz, I feel like there are many so called "infographics" flowing around the internet but many don't convey any relationship of the data they are presenting, but colorful and pretty graphics + text. Many of them are very popular, but I thought to myself, wait a minute, they are pretty bad "infographics"...? There is no story, no correlation between the data. Many people gave comments like "great infographic", "great presentation"... Is it just me? Or do most people don't realized what data viz is? For example:

Would you consider this as good or bad infographic? I thought this "infographic" have no "graphic" but text and color... no story...

Please correct me is I'm wrong.
    Thanks for sharing your idea.

  2. I definitely feel like I don't want to use the word infographic anymore. In my work I sometimes..well display numbers using some design but that is very different from when I'm doing data visualization in my work. Sometimes I just want to show some numbers (not graphically) but have it be visually appealing. It seems that people call that infographics now. It's totally different from the times when I need to actual take a lot of data, sort through it, understand where it's coming from, and figure out the best way to chart it to tell the story which is the most important to us. That's the visualization piece.
