<description>&#60;p&#62;When I submit a data entry with a certain time, it shows up in YFD as one hour later. I first noticed this after daylight saving time started.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;For the past couple of days, I'm just entering the time as one hour earlier as a workaround.

<title>How to design: growth potential of eCommerce?</title>
<link>http://forums.flowingdata.com/topic/how-to-design-growth-potential-of-ecommerce#post-1620</link>

<description>&#60;p&#62;I'm trying to find a way to illustrate the growth potential of apparel eCommerce on a single slide. Here's the story:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Only 7% of clothes are sold online. In comparison, 50% of computers are sold online.&#60;br /&#62;
Viewer thinks: &#34;yes, clothing eCommerce is indeed very insignificant&#34;&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;a href=&#34;http://www.flickr.com/photos/7617002@N07/4432961162/&#34; title=&#34;Untitled-1 by starryeye1, on Flickr&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;&#60;img src=&#34;http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2738/4432961162_7b1da6d2b8_m.jpg&#34; width=&#34;240&#34; height=&#34;162&#34; alt=&#34;Untitled-1&#34; /&#62;&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Yet, apparel is eCommerce biggest category, with more sales online than anything else.&#60;br /&#62;
Viewer thinks: &#34;OMG, there's such a growth potential with apparel eCommerce!&#34;&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;a href=&#34;http://www.flickr.com/photos/7617002@N07/4432186785/&#34; title=&#34;Untitled-2 by starryeye1, on Flickr&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;&#60;img src=&#34;http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2555/4432186785_7b8ca39eb2_m.jpg&#34; width=&#34;240&#34; height=&#34;162&#34; alt=&#34;Untitled-2&#34; /&#62;&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;If shown with two slides, the story evolves and has a punchline (&#34;clothing sales are so small&#34; &#38;gt; &#34;clothing sales are enormous and can grow fast&#34;). On a single slide, like Illustration #2 only, the story gets lost, and the growth potential is less obvious.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Any suggestions how to design such infographics; or maybe you can just point me to a freelancer who does these kind of designs?

<title>yfd developer api?</title>

<description>&#60;p&#62;I was wondering if a developer api already exists or is in the works? It would be nice to be able to reuse some of the data being sent to and aggregated by yfd (such as most recently read book for instance).&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;If not, I suppose a workaround would be to create another app that acts as a go-between my primary twitter account and yfd so that I could grab relevant data on the way over.

<description>&#60;p&#62;Just saw the Garamond item (&#60;a href=&#34;http://flowingdata.com/2010/01/29/save-pens-use-garamond-font&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;http://flowingdata.com/2010/01/29/save-pens-use-garamond-font&#60;/a&#62;) today.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I wrote some Perl script to read a BMP file of three fonts, all set to 24 point and displayed on a screen.  The size of the BMP was identical in all three cases, so the position of the text within the BMP field made no difference as long as it did not impinge on the border of the image. The script reads the BMP file and counts the black pixels/white pixels and expresses the number of black pixels as a percentage of all pixels (black + white).&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I used the following text:&#60;br /&#62;
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz&#60;br /&#62;
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ&#60;br /&#62;
0123456789&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Here are the results in descending order of &#34;ink usage.&#34;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Font: Arial&#60;br /&#62;
Percent of black =   11.975%&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Font: TimesRoman&#60;br /&#62;
Percent of black =    8.360%&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Font: Garamond&#60;br /&#62;
Percent of black =    6.062%&#60;/p&#62;

<description>&#60;p&#62;I'm working on a presentation to our school district, which is planning on closing a number of smaller elementary schools and combining them into a mega-elementary school. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I am looking for a way of showing the board, during a presentation we make to them, just what this does to our school size in comparison to the other schools in our province. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;(Yes, at the moment it's in PowerPoint.)&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I've been looking for ways of simply representing this, while at the same time showing the number of schools and the relative positive with some accuracy. So help me, the cyan thing and magenta thing from Data Underload #9 seems to be the best idea as yet! However, I do want to check to see if anyone else has some great ideas or examples.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Sample slides at the moment:&#60;br /&#62;
Our school Now&#60;br /&#62;
Currently have 315 students, in English and French&#60;br /&#62;
This makes us 359th in size in the province – 35% of schools are larger&#60;br /&#62;
with 6s and 7s back&#60;br /&#62;
In 2010/11, with return of grade 6s and 7s and projected kindergarten numbers, we would have 421 students, in English and French&#60;br /&#62;
This makes us 163rd in size in the province – 16% of schools are larger&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Take away French&#60;br /&#62;
Let’s now take away our French students – we have 273 left, English only&#60;br /&#62;
This makes us 461st in size in the province – 45% of schools are larger&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Add School A&#60;br /&#62;
If we add School A’s projected 2010/11 with 6s and 7s, we would have 470 students, English only&#60;br /&#62;
This makes us 93rd in size in the province – 9% of schools are larger&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Add School B&#60;br /&#62;
If we then add School B's projected 2010/11 with 6s and 7s, we would have 561 students, English only&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;This makes us 30th in size in the province – 3% of schools are larger&#60;br /&#62;
Assume 50% of French students transfer to English&#60;br /&#62;
A number of French students would not be travelling out of our area to go to school, for various reasons.&#60;br /&#62;
If we assume 50% of these students would transfer to English track, we would have 635 students, English only&#60;br /&#62;
This makes us 6th in size in the province – 0.5% of schools are larger

<description>&#60;p&#62;Hi, I am posting to twitter and YFD in cyrillics and while YFD had no problem with that for a while, recently (at some moment in the last week) all of my non-ASCII characters in the YFD entries got corrupted.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;From what I can see, it looks like unicode/double-byte characters got “over-unicoded” (i.e. when some layer of software that previously didn't specifically care about unicode at some moment forcingly encodes all that it had in the storage into double-byte form, without regard to what was the original content encoding in the first place).&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Why I blame storage:&#60;br /&#62;
- My test entry with cyrillics went through native YFD input form fine just now.&#60;br /&#62;
- My direct message from Twitter went intact as well.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I'll be glad to answer any questions and test any solutions if there's any chance to recover lost data. So far I stopped adding any data points so that I wouldn't lose it in case database is rolled back.

<description>&#60;p&#62;Hi all,&#60;br /&#62;
I'm just wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of papers concerning SCADA systems as a starting point for data visualisation. Obviously this relates far more to real time information (transit systems, power/gas systems, aviation, maritime etc) than to data review post-event(s), however this is an area I have more interest in.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Cheers all,&#60;br /&#62;

<description>&#60;p&#62;Hi all,&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;A big story in the UK today is the revelation that the Conservative party's main donor, Lord Ashcroft, doesn't pay tax on his non-UK earnings - &#60;a href=&#34;http://bit.ly/9u1t7O&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;http://bit.ly/9u1t7O&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;

<description>&#60;p&#62;Company: EnergyHub&#60;br /&#62;
Job Title: Data Visualization Guru&#60;br /&#62;
Location: New York, NY&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Description:&#60;br /&#62;
Based in New York City, EnergyHub is a well-funded and well-positioned startup in an exciting new market. We are the Consumer Face of the Smart Grid, serving to help consumers reduce household energy consumption and save money. We are a growing team of engineers, developers, and designers who produce smart, simple, and cost-effective energy management tools–including stand-alone consumer electronics as well as web-based and mobile software applications.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;We are presently seeking a talented data visualization designer to enhance our data-driven user interfaces with beautiful, engaging, and informative content to help people better understand their energy use. The right candidate will know the difference between a kilowatt and a kWh and be able to make that kind of data meaningful and actionable to the average homeowner. You are probably familiar with the work of Richard Thaler and Cass Susstein and think a certain &#34;minty&#34; financial website is kind of awesome.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The candidate will create live information graphics for thousands of individual users updating in real time, as well as automatically generated reports based on historical data. Both will be displayed across multiple digital platforms (embedded, web, mobile) delivered to the individual users to allow them to make better informed choices about their energy use.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;User testing and feedback from the design and software development process will inform your designs. You will be responsible for developing your ideas from early sketches to working prototypes ready for testing, and for working with the development team to fully implement successful designs. You should be able to write much of your own code.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Depending on the candidate’s background and skill set, there will be plenty of opportunity to lend your expertise to a range of other design and development efforts at EnergyHub.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Qualifications and Skills:&#60;br /&#62;
·       Broad knowledge and advanced skills in systematic visual design, information architecture, user interface, and a solid understanding of user-centered design principles&#60;br /&#62;
·       Strong visual design skills with a fanatical attention to detail&#60;br /&#62;
·       Able to produce results independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment&#60;br /&#62;
·       Must be highly motivated, detail-oriented, and organized&#60;br /&#62;
·       Expertise with all major graphic design and wireframing application suites required (e.g. Photoshop, InDesign, Balsamiq, etc.)&#60;br /&#62;
·       Programming experience and creation of interactive prototypes essential&#60;br /&#62;
·       RIA / UI / Widget Development, Web 2.0 Related Technologies (Flex 3, Processing, R, JavaScript/AJAX/JQuery/CSS), Framework/API Design, Information Architecture, User Experience, Usability&#60;br /&#62;
·       BA or MA in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, or equivalent. 4+ years of relevant experience&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;If interested, please email your resume with a cover letter to &#60;a href=&#34;mailto:jobs@energyhub.net&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;jobs@energyhub.net&#60;/a&#62;
