This response is really great!

Now that I know I'm not completely crazy, I think I'll perhaps set aside some hosting and maybe get to work setting up a framework.

Hopefully I can keep you guys updated with things. I'm sure I will run into issues where guidance is necessary.

Thanks for your interest, everyone.

Wow... That's pretty impressive given the quality and interaction built into some NYT graphics

It's probably worth pointing out that many NYT graphics are one-day turnaround, so even though time can be an issue, it doesn't have to be if the right people are on the job.

I share the enthusiasm for such a site and this is something I'd love to support.

One thought: As rshell correctly pointed out:

"good graphics take time to create"

I believe by taking away the written word, the need for compelling graphics arise. Such compelling graphics needs to communicate the idea behind the newsstory in a clear and understandable manner to avoid misconception. What I'm trying to say is that the less copy you have to communicate the better (read: coherent and telling) the graphics need to be.

Very interested in this project and eager to support.

I love this idea. I wish I'd thought of it. :)

I'm way busy with work and an active toddler, but I'd like to be a part of the discussion and perhaps contribute as time permits.

Kudos for the idea and for reaching out.

First let me start off by saying I love the idea. I would also carve out time each day to visit such a site. It would even motivate me to contribute a viz or two on occasion. Here are my thoughts:

>>I'd love to see a newspaper or web site that is nothing but graphs putting the issues of the day in context...

While I've always agreed that truly effective graphs, charts, infographics, etc. should be self explanatory, I think doing away with text or talking heads wouldn't appeal to the masses.

>>talking heads makes you want to take sides

Unfortunately, it's just as easy to achieve this effect with a skillfully crafted chart

>>Despite the well-regarded and indisputable skill of the Times' graphics department, I find the infographics are still too few and far between

This is because good graphics take time to create. Though, with the myriad of viz tools available, this is becoming less of an issue. I imagine it also has do with the availability of good data.

I've been thinking about this for a few years now, which would be great. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that the process of journalism is quite difficult on it's own. Add to that the relative density of data visualizations and the ease with which someone can mislead the viewer and you are most certainly not looking at an easy endeavor.

Not to be a discouraging voice as it's a great idea that will become a reality. I'm just saying that with the wealth of information we have access to it's easy to forget how hard it is to obtain that information in the first place.

I've been thinking a lot, ever since a recent post by Scott Adams on his blog. Scott Adams, the author of Dilbert expressed a desire for a website that's been bouncing around my head for a while.

"I'd love to see a newspaper or web site that is nothing but graphs putting the issues of the day in context. For ever major issue, there's generally one chart that captures the essence of the argument. I think charts would help put everyone on the same page whereas the continuous blah, blah, blah of talking heads makes you want to take sides."

I was originally drawn towards the idea because I found that I had a desire to practice making infographics in Illustrator, but I had a... data block. That is, I wasn't sure exactly what information I wanted to display. I am drawn to this idea of a consistent flow of information. I am drawn to the idea of allowing users to help pick the most important issues they want to be illustrated and visualized.

Personally, if there were a well-designed website, with consistent, timely, well-designed infographics on current news, I would make it a part of my daily routine to check it. The New York Times currently holds this place for me. Despite the well-regarded and indisputable skill of the Times' graphics department, I find the infographics are still too few and far between. I would love seeing the news displayed in innovative, interesting, and easy-to-understand illustrations. From humble, well-chosen pie charts, to complex depictions of misunderstood or ignored processes.

Currently I do freelance infographic design which takes up a lot of my time, and I know that other designers are just as busy. The website would have to be financially sustainable to be practical. Whether it is sustained through simple ads, sponsors, paid premium subscriptions, or through reprinting fees, ideally the website would be able to draw premium talent from the large infodesign community on the web.

If any of this rings true to you, please, send me an email and we can talk about it. If you are excited and would like to help, contribute, or you have similar ideas, let me know. I would very much like to make something like this happen. I have the excitement, the time, and the drive to get a project like this off the ground with some help from some talented like-minded people. If you have criticism, slight or severe, I appreciate any and all reality checks. I'd love to talk.

Thank you for your time,
EJ Fox
