<description>&#60;p&#62;I work for the Union of Concerned Scientists and we’re looking for a designer to do some data visualization work with us. Would you be or do you know anyone who would be interested? See RFP below. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;While the RFP is for this discrete project, we’ll have more data visualization/infographics projects in the coming year and are looking to build long-term relationships with freelancers so welcome any and all recommendations. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at klove [at] ucsusa.org. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;-----------------------------&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;RFP for UCS Data Visualization as part of our Clean Energy Campaign&#60;br /&#62;
Context:&#60;br /&#62;
When you flip the light switch at home, do you know where your electricity is coming from? Is your electricity provider also providing jobs here in California from clean, renewable sources, or just burning dirty fossil fuels? &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;As a whole, California is a leader in efforts to transition to a strong clean energy economy. We have a new law---one of the strongest in the U.S.---that requires utilities to get at least a third of their electricity from renewable sources, like the wind and the sun, by 2020. For the first time, our renewable energy law includes a mandate for publicly owned utilities, like Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;But not all electricity providers are starting from the same place. Some utilities are way ahead of the game, with over twenty percent of their power coming from renewable sources. Others are pretty far behind and have much work to do.&#60;br /&#62;
A new, first-of-its kind report from UCS takes a snapshot of where California’s ten largest publicly owned utilities were in 2010: &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;What percentage of each utility’s electricity came from renewable sources? &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Power generation creates jobs. Were they buying renewable electricity from sources in California? In other states? Outside the U.S? Also, were they signing the kind of contracts that will provide the state with clean power for a long period of time, or were they just buying enough power to look green for a couple of years? &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;How do the publicly owned utilities as a whole compare to California’s three biggest privately owned (for-profit) utilities; PG&#38;amp;E, Southern California Edison, and San Diego Gas &#38;amp; Electric. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;By providing information on the level of public utility renewable energy investments, UCS hopes to provide solutions for how best to move forward on achieving 33% renewables by 2020. Getting to 33% renewable electricity isn’t just important because it’s the law. Transitioning to more clean energy will create thousands of new jobs for Californians, clean up our air, reduce the heat-trapping emissions that cause global warming, and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Scope of work:&#60;br /&#62;
UCS wishes to develop one or two data visualizations to complement our analysis and illuminate the key stories of the report: how much renewable power did the utilities purchase, where is the power coming from, what kind of power is it (wind, solar, geothermal, etc.), and what is the impact of these renewable energy investments in relation to a long-term clean energy strategy for these utilities. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Goals:&#60;br /&#62;
Provide California target audiences the big picture they need on the status of public utility renewable energy investments to empower them to advocate for stronger renewable energy programs in their areas.&#60;br /&#62;
Provide policymakers with recommendations on how rules for the 33% renewable energy program should be developed to achieve maximum success. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Audience:&#60;br /&#62;
UCS members and activists—and the membership of allied organizations in California, including statewide groups and local advocates in the service territories of the individual utilities.&#60;br /&#62;
Commissioners and staff at the California Energy Commission.&#60;br /&#62;
Policy-makers and staff for the local governments overseeing the public utilities.&#60;br /&#62;
State policy-makers, including legislators and regulators in other state agencies.&#60;br /&#62;
Staff at the utilities. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Budget:&#60;br /&#62;
$3,000 &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Submissions of proposals:&#60;br /&#62;
UCS requests proposals from interested firms and individuals that include: 1) the project approach; 2) identification of the principals and staff assigned to the project; 3) a suggested timeline; 4) description and copies of work that has included translating data into explanatory images, if any; and 5) the anticipated project budget. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Proposals and questions should be directed to Laura Wisland at lwisland [at] ucsusa.org. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Deadline:&#60;br /&#62;
August 3, 2011

<title>Diseasome, explore the human disease network</title>
<link>http://forums.flowingdata.com/topic/diseasome-explore-the-human-disease-network#post-817</link>

<description>&#60;p&#62;Gephi team presents a science-mapping project: &#60;a href=&#34;http://diseasome.eu/&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;Diseasome&#60;/a&#62;. Asked by Magali Roux, Senior Scientist at CNRS, to create a website to come with the publication of her book, Biology - The digital era, we worked on the “Human Disease Network” dataset and built a network exploration platform.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;“On a unique place, one can find information about the book, the dataset related to the writings, an online data exploration framework and the file to manipulate these data with Gephi.”&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The HDN (Human Disease Network) and the GDN (Gene Disease Network) were extracted from the original dataset and treated with Gephi. From the results, an interactive map has been created with the help of RTGI/&#60;a href=&#34;http://linkfluence.net/&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;Linkfluence&#60;/a&#62; tools. A poster is also available, with the full network and some useful statistics.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Although this work is experimental, we hope it can help scientists to explore and search in this complexity. The Diseasome is above all an innovative way to present a scientific work. The importance of complex data in science and particularly network graphs brings a lot of challenges. As well as computational issues, many things can be done with graphic design and interaction.&#60;/p&#62;
