Hi,

I just did the US county themed map tutorial. I would like to do something similar with Canadian census tracts and census data. Has anyone come across a Canadian census tract SVG file? I've done some searching and haven't found anything. If one is not available any suggestions on creating a SVG file for Canadian census tracts.

Thanks,

Hi all,

I'm starting a new project where we'll need to utilize an SVG map of the US that contains all 40 something thousand US ZIP codes. Has anyone worked with a ZIP code map of the US before, or be able to give an educated guess as to the size of the file?

Thanks,

World map choropleth?

Hey guys, I've recently been working on a project that requires a world map choropleth. I read Nathan's post on creating a US County Thematic map (http://flowingdata.com/2009/11/12/how-to-make-a-us-county-thematic-map-using-free-tools/), which is extremely thorough.

However, I can't seem to figure out how the path ids are setup in the world map I want to use. Seems like they aren't organized by FIPS codes... Here's the map I'm using: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:World_map_-_low_resolution.svg

I wouldn't mind using this one as an alternative: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:BlankMap-World6-Equirectangular.svg

Perhaps someone could shed some light on this! Thanks.

Note: I'm familiar with this project http://gsl-nagoya-u.net/appendix/software/worldmap/ but I would prefer to use a different map than the one they provide.

I really like the maps of flight patterns I've seen and I'd like to create one. Ideally, I could do it on MapPoint, but I don't think it's possible. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to create a map showing connections between departure airports and destination airport? Actual flight pattern isn't necessary, just connection between two points (airports) with a strait line or preferable a gentle arc. Thanks.

A reader of our blog suggested that a recent post might be of interest to this forum. We've created a Wordpress plugin called Datapress that lets you embed rich data visualizations into your blog using the standard Wordpress WYSIWYG editing tool. You upload (or link to) a spreadsheet or other data file, then present it using maps, timelines, sortable lists, thumbnail collections, and a variety of other views, all of which can be filtered using various "facets" including lists, tag clouds, and sliders. There's more information in the blog post and project site listed above. The plugin itself is on the Wordpress plugin site. We're eager to have you try it out and give feedback, and happy to help with problems you encounter.

Good day, all!

I'm writing to solicit your participation in a casual map redesign competition, hosted by my blog, Cartastrophe. The aim is to see if we can improve upon Charles Joseph Minard's famed map of Napoleon's march to Moscow.

I have no big prizes to offer (except some free maps), nor is winning my competition likely to be something worthy of putting on your resume. I am merely one graduate student. But, I thought it would be fun and would like to get as many people as possible involved.

More details here: http://cartastrophe.wordpress.com/2010/03/18/getting-minard-to-spin-in-his-grave/

The deadline is June 1st, 2010.

Thanks for your indulgence, and I hope to see some excellent and inspiring works come out of this.

Hi,

I have a simple web site dataset consisting of:

Page
Next Page
Number of sessions making that step

The "Page" and "Next Page" values can be the same in a row (e.g. a postback).

I'd like to show this data as a map of pages with arrows showing the number of sessions going from one page to the next. I can do this manually of course, but I'm looking for something that will do it automatically, allowing me optimise the diagram and show arrows of different sizes, for example. A web based solution would work well, but failing that anything will do! Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Andy.

I'm a Silverlight/WPF developer who has recently gotten interested in visualization (I did a goofy little viz about the number of times the New York Times mentioned the 2008 presidential candidates during the two years preceding the election: http://www.designerwpf.com/2009/02/22/infoviz-project-for-tim-heuer-presidential-candidate-tracker/ )

I've been looking for some way of mapping data by county, but I can't find any good free (or cheap) vector maps that split up the country by county. Vector maps are ideal for working in Silverlight because they can be easily converted to XAML Paths that can be modified and animated.

Anyone have any suggestions?

(By the way, if anyone is looking, there is a pretty decent SVG map of the US state by state that is free for use: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Blank_US_Map.svg )

Hi, my NGO recently produced a webmapping on 12 European countries. This maybe interest some of you.

"The first aim of the EuroSiS project is to explore and understand the large, open and dynamic topics dedicated to science in society on the web through the collective construction of a mapping tool. The results of EuroSiS activities consist in a collection of SiS-maps including themes and actors at different levels of analysis (common European themes, national and national neighbourhoods SIS themes, particular themes through national and European dimensions...).
It consists also in the elaboration of a common description schemes and a collective vocabulary for resources description among 12 NCPs involved.

As regards to methods and tools, EURO-SIS mapping project is based on:

A) Use of visualization for communication/promotion of EuroSiS project
B) Production of graphical synthesis of large sets of data
C) Extraction of visual patterns from web data analysis (centre, periphery, clusters, levels of hierarchy, borders...)
D) With different levels of data (zoom) and analysis of SIS European themes.
E) And preparing an information archiving process on specific topics and, beyond, and possible Web Information System (or portal) dedicated to European SIS domains."

You'll find the documents but also the raw data and statistics.

I've always wondered about mapping data and cartograms and I just found a perfect instance around which to center a few questions:

A few weeks ago, this map of the human development index by state was put up on wikipedia. Recently it has come under fire because the color coding causes it to misrepresent the differences between states. That is, Mississippi is colored yellow and WV colored light green even though their difference is 0.001.

My first question would be what is the best way to make this map? If it were up to me, with my limited knowledge, I would grab this blank map from wikipedia, make up some bins (.75-.79, .80-.85, etc.) and a color scheme, fire up an image editor and just colorfill the different sections. Is there a better way?

What about the color difference problem between MS and WV? My first instinct would be to just map the values from maybe .750 - 1.000 onto a 8-bit (255 value) color scheme and calculate a color value for every state. Would that be the right approach?

Thanks,
Sachin

Hey folks!

So, I think I might have made up the term Multi-phase, but it seems to describe what I am trying to find out.

I work with the Center for Constitutional Rights (ccrjustice.org); we recently got a massive amount of data from the NY Police Department that details 10 years of Stop and Frisk Data within the 5 boroughs of NYC. In this data are all kinds of variables including location, times, and nature of incident.

I am looking for a person/firm/software that will help me to display this data and derived statistics over a map. GIS style, but something that looks good as well.

Any hints, tips, references, or actual solutions? I would be grateful and excited to receive. We have institutional funding for this type of project as well, so scope and resources are open and flexible.

Thanks FlowingData community, I'm new (as a FlowingData member - not as a data geek tho), but looking forward to being a contributing member.
