<description>&#60;p&#62;The Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is a not-for-profit center for engineering, research, and development. Located north of Washington, DC, APL is a division of one of the world's premier research universities, The Johns Hopkins University (JHU).&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The Human Machine Interaction section of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) researches, develops, and prototypes software for solving multi-faceted knowledge-centric engineering problems. Complex computational systems must ultimately present information to humans in a way that conveys meaning, provides a common view into complex problems, and supports decision making. APL offers paid science and engineering internships each summer. The program provides practical work experience and an introduction to APL. Students spend the summer working with APL scientists and engineers, conducting research, developing leadership skills, and growing professionally.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The data visualization engineering intern will work on developing visual representations of abstract cyber-security data and will drive user experience design (Ux) efforts by creating software that interfaces with underlying systems. They will work with the machine interfaces engineering staff on a multi-disciplinary team. The intern will create software that provides compelling and useful data visualization, that allows for visualization manipulation, and that helps control underlying software systems.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Candidate should have experience with computer-based interactive design in a web environment and be able to take concepts from storyboarding to execution using graphic design software and standard web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and Javascript visualization libraries/frameworks. The candidate should be familiar with user experience design concepts to include the cognitive aspects of data presentation. Desired skills include experience with visualization frameworks such as Processing or Prefuse and basic development experience in relevant languages such as Python, PHP, Ruby, or Java. Minimum overall GPA 3.0/4.0 is required.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62; 	For most positions, applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information.  Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.&#60;/p&#62;
