I work for the Union of Concerned Scientists and we’re looking for a designer to do some data visualization work with us. Would you be or do you know anyone who would be interested? See RFP below.

While the RFP is for this discrete project, we’ll have more data visualization/infographics projects in the coming year and are looking to build long-term relationships with freelancers so welcome any and all recommendations.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at klove [at] ucsusa.org.

-----------------------------

RFP for UCS Data Visualization as part of our Clean Energy Campaign
Context:
When you flip the light switch at home, do you know where your electricity is coming from? Is your electricity provider also providing jobs here in California from clean, renewable sources, or just burning dirty fossil fuels?

As a whole, California is a leader in efforts to transition to a strong clean energy economy. We have a new law---one of the strongest in the U.S.---that requires utilities to get at least a third of their electricity from renewable sources, like the wind and the sun, by 2020. For the first time, our renewable energy law includes a mandate for publicly owned utilities, like Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

But not all electricity providers are starting from the same place. Some utilities are way ahead of the game, with over twenty percent of their power coming from renewable sources. Others are pretty far behind and have much work to do.
A new, first-of-its kind report from UCS takes a snapshot of where California’s ten largest publicly owned utilities were in 2010:

What percentage of each utility’s electricity came from renewable sources?

Power generation creates jobs. Were they buying renewable electricity from sources in California? In other states? Outside the U.S? Also, were they signing the kind of contracts that will provide the state with clean power for a long period of time, or were they just buying enough power to look green for a couple of years?

How do the publicly owned utilities as a whole compare to California’s three biggest privately owned (for-profit) utilities; PG&E, Southern California Edison, and San Diego Gas & Electric.

By providing information on the level of public utility renewable energy investments, UCS hopes to provide solutions for how best to move forward on achieving 33% renewables by 2020. Getting to 33% renewable electricity isn’t just important because it’s the law. Transitioning to more clean energy will create thousands of new jobs for Californians, clean up our air, reduce the heat-trapping emissions that cause global warming, and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

Scope of work:
UCS wishes to develop one or two data visualizations to complement our analysis and illuminate the key stories of the report: how much renewable power did the utilities purchase, where is the power coming from, what kind of power is it (wind, solar, geothermal, etc.), and what is the impact of these renewable energy investments in relation to a long-term clean energy strategy for these utilities.

Goals:
Provide California target audiences the big picture they need on the status of public utility renewable energy investments to empower them to advocate for stronger renewable energy programs in their areas.
Provide policymakers with recommendations on how rules for the 33% renewable energy program should be developed to achieve maximum success.

Audience:
UCS members and activists—and the membership of allied organizations in California, including statewide groups and local advocates in the service territories of the individual utilities.
Commissioners and staff at the California Energy Commission.
Policy-makers and staff for the local governments overseeing the public utilities.
State policy-makers, including legislators and regulators in other state agencies.
Staff at the utilities.

Budget:
$3,000

Submissions of proposals:
UCS requests proposals from interested firms and individuals that include: 1) the project approach; 2) identification of the principals and staff assigned to the project; 3) a suggested timeline; 4) description and copies of work that has included translating data into explanatory images, if any; and 5) the anticipated project budget.

Proposals and questions should be directed to Laura Wisland at lwisland [at] ucsusa.org.

Deadline:
August 3, 2011

The New York Times official soccer blog, Goal, liked what we did with our World Cup Radial Bracket Poster last year so we made them a radial bracket of the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League. Soccer, known to the rest of the world as football, might not be massive in the U.S. yet, but the Champions League final was the most watched televised sporting event in the world in 2009 (yes, more than the Super Bowl). With 3.5 billion soccer fans world wide, it is by far the most popular sport on Earth. We thought a few of you might appreciate some free Champions League bracket wallpapers for your desktops. Now you can keep obsessing about the tournament all day as you count the minutes until the next match.

Have a glance at this morning's BIG infographic from Smashing Data: World of Programming.

Image is http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/aboutprogramming04.jpg

For methodology, legend, layout etc, see
explanation of methodology.

The author, Adit Gupta, thoughtfully responds to nearly all of the in-depth reader comments. (Smashing Data had asked commenters to rate the work in their comments!) Mr. Gupta's website is what-a-geek dot com. A short bio from smashing data describes him as

A web designer and developer from India with deep interests in computer science, art, math and astrophysics".

My comment was toward end as of 6/6/2010 2pm PST comment section.

Nathan, what do you and your readers think? There is a lot to chew on here, given the recent critique of infographic usage. I'm not sure if it is article-worthy or not. Although the subject matter is good, the issues may be yet another example of the pro's and con's in your recent Flowing Data articles (and of commenter's observations too).

Some of the comments are funny, but most are sincere and well-meaning. I'm not certain if the Infographic is a success overall, in my opinion. But I see potential for a redesigned version 2.

I know the 3d part is a bit gratuitous, but was trying for a visual element. I think you're right about grouping by sport... was just trying to add an extra layer of information.

Thanks for the comments, man.

@jsyingling good stuff. i really like the sports concept and will be interested to see where the infojocks project goes.

Some of the labels on the other shots feel a little crowded, because they're small and so many of them, but maybe it looks better on the 27x39 poster. I've also never been a big fan of non-interactive 3-D maps, but that could be just be me. I think I'd also group the sports together on that map instead of sorting by time. Number of titles by sports seems more interesting than the order in which they happened since we don't actually have real time units on the vertical.

Overall-- really like it.

Flowing Dataians. I just finished up my first full size infographic poster project (www.infojocks.com) and am wondering what you guys think. For the next iteration I'm looking to continue to develop the charts/graphs/colors for clarity. Kind of took off with Tufte's sparklines and pushed it as far as I could. My interest in infographics is founded in design not statistics, so any input about the stastitical content is much appreciated. There is a gallery of the poster available here: http://www.infojocks.com/store.html and I uploaded a few pictures.

Nice and important graphic. Can you think of a way to add number of people killed in each country?
