Analytical Application Design & Visualization Team Leader for NYC Tech Startup

Cross Commerce Media operates Collective[i], a cloud-based analytics platform that unifies a company’s marketing data from disparate sources so that marketers can access and analyze data in near real time and in a single place.

Greetings,
I'm working with the sociology department at Rice University on a short film about Dr. Stephen Klineberg's work studying the city of Houston for 30 years with the Houston Area Survey. A huge part of this film will be illustrating his data. Some examples are :
1. Immigration patterns in the US since 1880
2. The changing population of Houston to a minority majority city (70% under age 30 non-anglo, 70% over 60 are anglo).
3. Educational attainment by race
4. Changing attitudes towards urban living.

We are looking for a freelance visualization artist that can create animated visualization of his data to be included in this film. The clips will need to be rendered at 1920X1080 preferably and some may require timing to a voice over. There will be about 10-12 clips that will range from 12-40 seconds. If you are interested please contact me at j o h n at j o h n c a r r i t h e r s d o t c o m with your rates (hourly or daily) and links to your portfolio.

Here is an example of a teaser we made of the piece to create interest in the project by funders.

Thanks. I have found similar APIs, but i'm after something that is simpler to use as I intend to roll this visualisation technique out to non-technical people if it works for my intended purpose.

Perhaps spreadsheet type application isnt really what i'm looking for. A closer fit would be something like a mind mapping software (like freemind), which allows users to build up layers of information using nodes. A freemind mindmap - in a sunburst chart format (or radial tree format) is the kind of thing i'm looking for.

I'm new here - so hi :o)

I am working on a project that involves generating hierachial data to 3 sub levels.

I am looking at different ways of visualising this information in a pleasing way and on my searches round the web came across Sunburst charts (otherwise known as hierachial pie/donut charts, or space filled radial tree charts).

Here are a couple of examples of what i'm trying to generate:

http://shiftcontrol.dk/uploads/57/2.jpg

There seem to be plenty of applications that use such charts to display data - mostly harddrive use monitors, but I am having difficulty finding any spreadsheet type applications where you can build one up from an arbitrary set of data.

Can anyone help.

Seems like that map you are trying to use doesn't have any geographic information associated with it. The paths all have an id, but that's probably just order of creation or something.

The second one you posted is actually the same map used in Nathan's book to show how the same technique is used for a world map. Using that map just involves lining up the country codes used in the svg to whatever data you are using.

For a combined 2D/3D solution, you may store data in KML

Hey guys, I've recently been working on a project that requires a world map choropleth. I read Nathan's post on creating a US County Thematic map (http://flowingdata.com/2009/11/12/how-to-make-a-us-county-thematic-map-using-free-tools/), which is extremely thorough.

However, I can't seem to figure out how the path ids are setup in the world map I want to use. Seems like they aren't organized by FIPS codes... Here's the map I'm using: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:World_map_-_low_resolution.svg

I wouldn't mind using this one as an alternative: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:BlankMap-World6-Equirectangular.svg

Perhaps someone could shed some light on this! Thanks.

Note: I'm familiar with this project http://gsl-nagoya-u.net/appendix/software/worldmap/ but I would prefer to use a different map than the one they provide.

Hi Flowing Data people this may interest you !

For its monthly data vizualisation, faberNovel created a tool for the night birds, with this map updated in real time of the trendy places where Geeks hang out in Paris

Who would have predicted 15 years ago, that the most trendy places of Paris would host geeks? Passion for technology used to mean social exclusion. Today, Geek is chic, they startup, they tweet and they even throw Angry Birds at pigs without looking lame!

Fortunately they have the pleasant habit of geotagging, faberNovel took the opportunity to create an interactive map of hip places in Paris. Updated in real time, it’s they best way to be aware of the nocturnal wandering of Geeks, boys or girls!

This map displays the visualization of Foursquare check-ins for a selection of trendy places in Paris

The size of the circle is proportional to the number of people who checked in in each location. Colors distinguish the places where women outnumber men (pink), the places were men are in majority (blue) and tie (purple)

The website : http://visu.fabernovel.com/foursquare/en/

Regards
